Metal Injection Molding

Method

CNC turning produces parts by “turning” rod material and feeding a cutting tool into the turning material. On a lathe, the material to be cut rotates while a cutter is fed into the rotating workpiece. The cutter can be fed at a variety of angles and many tool shapes can be used.

Advantages

CNC turning provides an economical way to make parts that are commonly symmetrical about an axis of revolution.

Method

A milling machine uses a cutting tool that moves in all three dimensions, removing material to achieve the desired part shape. A cutting tool protrudes down from a rotating spindle. A block of material is placed on a moving table below the cutter. A computer controls the vertical (Z axis) motion of the cutter and the horizontal (X and Y axis) motion of the block of material. The cutter is guided to move through the material, removing portions to create shapes.

Advantages

Complex shapes and high dimensional tolerances are possible. CNC milling can produce almost any 2D or 3D shape provided that the rotating cutting tools can reach the material to be removed.

Method

Wire EDM cutting, also known as electrical discharge machining, is a process that uses an electrically energized thin wire to slice through metal. This method uses rapid, controlled, repetitive spark discharges from the wire to the workpiece, thereby eroding the metal away.

Advantages

Wire EDM can provide high dimensional accuracy for close fitting parts. EDM can cut material thickness from only a few thousandths of an inch to several inches.

Method

Creep feed grinding, an underutilized and maybe unfamiliar technology, is ideal for heavy material removal. It cuts difficult-to-machine materials, easily holds precision tolerances, and leaves few, if any, burrs.

Any materials are available for grinding, precisely and burr-free.

Method

Knurling is a mechanical process that creates a rough-textured pattern on a surface by pressing a textured tool against a rotating surface.Knurling provides a way to create grips without additional components. Shapes are primarily cylindrical surfaces. Usually diamond or parallel line patterns and used. The process is usually done on ductile metals.

Advantages

Cost reduction options are primarily the reduction of the diameter and length of the knurled surface.

Method

The feedstock is heated and forced into the mold cavities. The newly molded parts are the shape of the final part, but larger. The next step is called the first stage depending. Finally, the parts are set on ceramic trays, supported by fixtures if necessary, and placed in a furnace to remove the last of the binder and sinter the parts.

Advantages

Metal injection molding can be used to fabricate complex parts economically in structural metals, it can provide significant cost savings to the savvy manufacturer.
